-since it is a small button I think it was for the cuff or collar and not the front of a uniform
I GOT  THIS BUTTON IN A LARGE LOT OF MOSTLY  ANTIQUE AMERICAN MILITARY BUTTONS SO DO NOT KNOW MUCH MORE ABOUT IT OTHER THAN WHAT IS MARKED ON THE BUTTON. THE BUTTON HAS A SHANK ON THE BACK TO SEW IT ON TO GARMENT- BUT IF IT WAS ORIGINALLY MARKED BY MAKER ON THE BACK- IT IS NOT READABLE .
I try to keep ALL KINDS OF NAVY AND OTHER MILITARY BUTTONS in stock-search my eBay store under buttons if you need more or less than what is offered here-I always combine multiply sales for shipping savings-but wait for invoice for best price.
