    Description

This one is a mystery to me. I found it in an old estate in Portland, OR WWI era British Artillery? Perhaps a Vunteer or Militia unit?  But it is a "mess dress" uniform coat. The buttons are made by J.R. GAUNT & SON Ltd. LONDON ENGLD. I believe this format of button marking started in 1899, and the coat construction is quite old. So I am GUESSING this uniform falls in the 1899-1920-ish range. While researching, I have found the button design (with 3 cannons on a shield and crown above) used by a few units, but I have not found one with this motto incorporated. I am sure British collectors can quickly identify this, but I have had no luck yet. Much of the lining is nicely quilted. Surprisingly nice for its age. Remarkably, I have searched this pretty well and am not seeing a single moth nip. You can see where insignia were mounted on the standup collar. I suspect these were flaming bomb insignia worn by Artillery and Fusiliers. The gold cord and tape details on the collar, cuffs, etc are wonderful. The only flaw I am finding is the tape, on the top edge of the rear collar, is coming loose in spots. I think the thread has probably just deteriorated with age. But, overall, an unusually nice example for its age. No markings or labels that I have found. Shipped with Priority mail.
