Description
A bakers' dozen of pre-Columbian stamps and seals made from stone and/or clay. Some appear to have been repaired. They are from the estate of John Coury, formerly of Oakton, VA, who passed away in 2009. I purchased a large lot of fragments, beads, arrowheads, and small figures from that estate and have owned them since 2009. This offering and the ones I've offered previously come from that lot. These items were found in a Mauna Loa macadamia box marked "Seals Tumaco culture and other items".Mr. Coury worked as a Peace Corps volunteer in Central America in the 1960's, following that work with stints at World Bank and Pan American Health Organization, finishing his career with USAID. He found (and purchased) small artifacts in spots he was posted during his career and left notes identifying many of the pieces or small bags of items as being from Bolivia, Cuzco, etc. or of Incan or other origin (sometimes with question marks if he was not confident). He also documented his travels through extensive photographic records (slides mainly, and most now gone).
All that by way of background.
These pieces are not identified beyond the label on the box they were in and so I have no way of knowing where he may have come across them other than a few pieces of paper from that box (pictured). I can supply pics of other finds if it would be helpful to a prospective buyer.
I welcome additional information from anyone knowledgeable.
As pictured condition. The additional shards in the first pic will be included as they were found in the same section of the box with the other pieces. I don't know how closely they are related, if at all.
Please check the pics and my feedback (particularly on the other Coury items I've sold thus far) and thanks for taking the time to read this. I will cheerfully attempt to answer questions if you have any.
