    Description

This listing is for a pre-Soviet
era cloth stockinette doll from the Ryazan district. She was recently purchased from the estate of the 89 year old son of the original owner--his parents were immigrants to America from Cornol, Switzerland after WW1.
The doll dates to the turn of the century, probably 1910-1920 and is made of cloth stuffed with straw. Her face is molded and hand painted and she wears traditional Russian peasant clothing---a red cotton headscarf with a patterned headband, a patchwork skirt with a cotton apron over the dress, a white slip with black pin-striped underskirt and wrapped cotton leggings.
She stands 14" tall. There is a label sewn to the back of her striped slip but it is to worn to read. It probably said "Ryazan District Woman" or "Made in Russian" on it.
Condition: She is in poor condition and has been well-loved.  There is wear on the her extremities---nose and cheeks and fingers. Her clothing is torn, worn, faded and pinned together in places and she is missing her shoes.
