Description
This is a stock certificate from 'The Pratt & Whitney Company.' Unissued, dated 189_. It is hand-signed by Amos Whitney as president at the bottom. It was printed by International Bank Note and has a super vignette of Mercury at a drafting table. Clean condition with punch cancellations at the bottom, one of them touching the signature. Whitney's is the far more rare signature of the two founders.Pratt & Whitney originally produced machine tools and were drafted by their parent company to manufacture airplane engines in the 1920s. They became a leader in the industry and eventually merged with Boeing.

Amos Whitney
(October 8, 1832 – August 5, 1920) was a mechanical engineer and Connecticut inventor born in Biddeford, Maine. In 1860 he partnered with Francis A. Pratt to organize the Pratt & Whitney company to manufacture machine tools, tools for the makers of sewing machines, and gun making machinery for use by the Union Army during the American Civil War.
He employed W. A. Rogers and G. M. Bond in 1879 to develop the Rogers-Bond comparator, credited with rescuing mechanical science and industry from inconvenience. He also established policies leading to successful training of apprentices there and eventually became president, he retired at age 69 in 1901 when the company was acquired by Niles-Bement-Pond Company. Amos Whitney was a descendant of Eli Whitney.
He died in Portland, Maine in 1920.
